A former retreat in the Swiss cultural capital of Sils Maria is reborn at the hand of Parisian studio Laplace to become the new hospitality destination Chesa Marchetta. The historic postwar structure is warmly redeveloped to host a 13-bedroom hotel and 46-seat restaurant—as well as a three-bedroom house—operated by global hospitality group Artfarm. “We wanted guests to feel grounded and gently enveloped by the atmosphere of the place. Not overwhelmed by design, but immersed in it. The intention was to create a sense of calm continuity, as though stepping into a building that has evolved slowly over time,” says Laplace principal and cofounder Luis Laplace. “More than anything, we hope guests feel a connection: to the history embedded in the walls, to the surrounding Alpine landscape, and to the slower rhythms of life in the Engadin.”
Accented by filtered light and the quiet presence of art, a sense of historic charm is undeniable. The experience unfolds gradually into a showcase of local craftsmanship against an authentic, regional natural palette of lime plaster, solid wood, and stone that imbues warmth and depth. Original materials were preserved where possible alongside reclaimed wood and antique furnishings layered alongside regionally sourced artisanal pieces. “Materials were chosen not for visual effect alone, but for the way they shape experience,” Laplace adds. “They anchor the project in its landscape and ensure that the building will continue to evolve gracefully over time.”
