Kane Sarhan, cofounder and CCO of THE WELL, splits his time between Miami and Mexico City. We asked him for his list of not-to-miss places.
His why: Cities either survived or thrived during COVID and Mexico City thrived. I was a 17-year New Yorker, and Mexico City is everything I love about New York with nothing I hate. I love that the city can have such a balance of indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s my favorite thing about it.

Hotels
Condesa has such a history of design and art in the center of the city and specifically architecture. Hotel CondesaDF was the reigning king of hotels for the longest time in Mexico City. When Volga opened, for me, it was the perfect mixture of Mexico City charm: eccentric design with good service. I love the interior courtyard. It’s just such a good hotel.
What I really love about Colima 71 Casa de Arte Hotel is that it feels extremely residential. It feels well designed, but it just feels like I’m at home. I’m just such a minimalist and I love everything to be cream or gray or beige or black, so it personally just is comfy on my eyes. There’s always a little place to have breakfast, and one thing I didn’t realize was how good the restaurant is. There is a club component too, which is new.
F&B
I’m a pizza junkie. Pizza is my happy place. What’s really cool about Café Drama is it brings a bit of that fun, artistic, goofy side that you often find in Condesa and Roma into Polanco. A little bit younger and more flavorful. It has the pizza component, and it has the nightclub component, which I just think is very interesting.
I love Indian food and it took me a long time to find good Indian food in the city. Masala y Maíz is obviously not traditional Indian food, but their freaking samosas and that little freaking fried chicken thing they do is one of the most indulgent and delicious things I’ve ever eaten. One of the things I love about them is that their chairs are so comfortable. I have a thing for restaurant chairs and they have those black leather slingback chairs.
Expendio de Maiz is a must for lunch. Be prepared to wait for a table, but it will be worth it. Marlindo is great for casual seafood Mexican fare… and for when you don’t want to wait in line or deal with any fuss.
I traditionally have avoided straight clubs for a long time, but Kinshasa has such good energy. It’s one of those places that you can go for dinner and then it goes into late night. You don’t have to go anywhere; you don’t have that awkward lull of two hours between dinner and going out that ruins the night. It has great Afrohouse and Afrobeats, sometimes with drums and sometimes with live vocals. There’s Moroccan influences, but then they have these amazing traditional African masks. There must be over 100 of them. The whole place is this orangy-red, sexy light. That is what really makes it.
SIC is the favorite. In the past year, they’ve renovated the space, they put the DJ in the center, which completely changed the vibe of the whole place and made it way better. If you want to go out and dance on Saturday night, there aren’t a ton of options that are gay and have that environment.

Retail
Vabad is a great men’s clothing store that can customize anything. I’m very minimalist in my fashion. I like solid colors, I like things that I can wear seven different ways, which his clothes are. The quality and the experience is just so special and it’s very aligned with my aesthetic.
I was a multiple fragrance person for many, many years. I would change my fragrance based on my outfit. Then I discovered a fragrance at Xinu and it’s the only one I wear. The fragrances are so good, but it’s the best fragrance shopping experience you’ll ever have in your entire life. The stores are so thoughtfully designed.
Wellness
I want to take care of myself, and I just want it to be easy and seamless. I love Casa Koti because it’s really a beautiful space, but it’s just functional. You have your cold plunge, you have your infrared, you can do your contrast bathing. It’s reasonably priced, it’s super hygienic, and there’s the social element.
The Mat is probably my top-three yoga Pilates studio in the world, and I do a lot of yoga and Pilates. The design of the space, the lighting—it’s beautiful. I love that it’s heated and the teachers are really good.
Commando is the oldie and goodie. It’s so humbling. If I return to Mexico City and I go hit a workout there and I haven’t acclimated to the altitude, I will literally be on my knees. The circuits have become popular now, but they’ve been doing the circuits for a long time. If you want a day pass in a gym, Sports World the best gym to go to. If you’re a traditional gym person, that’s the one you go to. It’s just tried and true.
Cultural
La Lagunilla, the Sunday flea market, is my favorite. It’s the best. It’s one of the most special things in the whole city. Bring an empty suitcase.
Museo Jumex is the most renowned museum in the city. Very sophisticated with fantastic programming in a David Chipperfield building. Kurrimanzutto is the best gallery—the Mexican sibling of Marian Goodman Gallery in New York.
