Spread across more than 3,700 square feet in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the new Messa House store is dreamt up as a site for respite amid the urban bustle. Locally based studio UP2DATE architects designed the intimate retail space with human flow in mind, considering how bodies respond to and appreciate architecture, proportion, and form. “We wanted Messa House to feel less like a store and more like quiet infrastructure for daily life, and to create a space that is easy to understand yet rich and challenging in the way it is made,” says UP2DATE architect Akhat Baimenov.

Local traditions and architectural heritage inspire a store defined by utility, functional clarity, structural logic, and rejection of excess to ensure a comfortable and legible space. The simplified muse of traditional Kazakh yurts yields emotional resonance that softens blanched interiors with a sense of domesticity. Across a fluid layout of interconnected areas—including a café—weight and tactility are conveyed via locally inspired materials like shell limestone from the Mangystau region adorning walls, cladding, and even custom furniture.
