Upper House Shanghai’s contemporary bistro Sui Tang Li has unveiled four new private dining rooms crafted by Australian studio Mitchell & Eades. East meets West across spaces crafted to complement the aesthetics of the main dining floor while radiating an exclusive sense of glam. “The main source of inspiration was the duality of Haipai and the interaction between Chinese culture and Western architecture, fashion, art, and lifestyle,” says Mitchell & Eades design director Jenna Madden. “Our vision was to create private dining rooms that feel contemporary but deeply rooted in the city’s identity, that spoke to the modern guest and reflected the values of the Sui Tang Li cuisine.”

Cultural heritage is expressed through a contemporary lens of rich textures and patterns as well as Art Deco motifs reinterpreted across lighting, chairs, tables, tableware, rugs, and other furnishings. Both formal and fanciful, an intimate bespoke charm permeates the rooms as they balance decadence and elegance embodied in sculpted ceilings, natural hues, graceful curves, and visual symmetry. Bold marble, warm timber floors, contemporary European lighting, rich velvet, Italian leather, custom wallpaper and artwork also abound.

The 10-seat room Nuan He inspires connection against a palette of apricot and burgundy while the Yan Zi room invokes drama with a suspended dome serving as its focal point. The Qin Bai and You Qing rooms share a light effervescence through celadon tones as well. Retractable screens divide the rooms while supporting flexible reconfiguration into a sprawling banquet hall underscoring an overall commitment to luxury and the integrity of tradition. “This is a project about atmosphere as much as form,” Madden adds. “A space designed to feel warm, intimate and quietly transporting.”
